ASTRONOMER RESOURCES / GLOSSARY
Speak Astronomer.
The terms you will meet in the console and the docs, in plain language.
23 terms
- AdoptionFleet
- Bringing an existing cluster under Astronomer management by registering it and applying the agent manifest. Astronomer does not create clusters.
- AgentFleet
- The Astronomer component inside each adopted cluster. It connects outbound to the management plane and carries API, log, exec, service and delivery traffic.
- AssignmentDelivery
- The versioned instruction a cluster’s agent receives for a deployment. Each cluster gets increasing assignment generations; stale ones are rejected.
- BaselineFleet
- The small set of components installed on adoption: Flux controllers, Trivy image scanning unless you opt out, and metrics exporters when Quick Start is selected.
- Bundle versionDelivery
- An immutable, centrally verified version of a Helm or Kustomize component, pinned to a commit, digest or chart version plus checksum.
- CatalogDelivery
- The Helm charts a cluster’s Apps page offers, from curated, Astronomer first-party, community and operator-added sources.
- Cluster groupFleet
- A named set of clusters used to organize the fleet and to select clusters for delivery.
- Compliance baselineGovernance
- A preset that applies audit retention, Pod Security, two-factor and related settings for a standard such as PCI DSS 4.0 or SOC 2. Not a certification.
- DexGovernance
- The open-source identity broker Astronomer bundles for single sign-on connectors. Off by default.
- DriftDelivery
- A difference between what was released to a cluster and what is running there, reported from Flux conditions and inventory.
- Effective permissionsGovernance
- Everything a person can do, with the role binding each permission comes from.
- FluxDelivery
- The open-source GitOps controllers Astronomer runs on each cluster: source, Kustomize and Helm, pinned to the Astronomer release.
- Management planeArchitecture
- The self-hosted Astronomer server, worker, console, PostgreSQL and queue, running on a Kubernetes cluster you control.
- Member clusterArchitecture
- An adopted cluster managed by Astronomer, as opposed to the cluster the management plane runs on.
- Onboarding bundleFleet
- A reusable set of tools, policy and project defaults to apply to adopted clusters. Called a cluster template in the API.
- OutboxArchitecture
- PostgreSQL tables holding committed work and audit events until they are processed, so a queue or worker failure does not lose them.
- Placement previewDelivery
- The server-evaluated list of clusters a target selects and excludes. A rollout is bound to its digest.
- ProjectGovernance
- A tenant on shared clusters: namespaces, members, quotas, policy, catalogs and cloud credentials.
- Proxy kubeconfigFleet
- A short-lived, revocable, read-only kubeconfig whose requests route through Astronomer.
- Read auditGovernance
- Policies that record sensitive read access in addition to changes.
- RolloutDelivery
- Releasing a bundle version to a target’s frozen placement under a strategy, approvals, maintenance windows and a failure threshold.
- SourceDelivery
- A project-scoped Git, OCI artifact, Helm HTTP or Helm OCI location that bundle versions come from. Credentials are write-only.
- TargetDelivery
- The clusters a component should run on, selected by label or cluster group, with optional per-target overrides.
